Sedation Dentistry
St. Joseph, Michigan
At Michigan Coast Dental, we understand that many of our valued patients tense up with fear at the thought of setting foot in a dentist's office. We are proud to offer sedation dentistry options to ensure you are relaxed and free of stress throughout any dental procedure. Your comfort, safety, and wellbeing are always our top priorities!
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry, also known as sleep dentistry, involves using medication to help anxious patients relax while getting the dental care they need. Regardless of the type of sedation you receive, we will use a local anesthetic to numb the area and relieve your pain and discomfort.
Who Is a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is recommended for people with dental phobia, a real fear or anxiety that interferes with getting their needed dental care. It is also beneficial for patients with sensitive teeth, a bad gag reflex, a low pain threshold, or complex dental problems. Sedation dentistry is especially helpful for children who can't sit still for long periods or those requiring a large amount of dental work completed.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Laughing Gas)
This form of minimal conscious sedation involves breathing in a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a mask. You will feel relaxed and comfortable throughout treatment. You will remain fully awake and responsive. Once your procedure is complete and we remove the mask, the effects of the gas will wear off right away. You'll be able to drive yourself home safely after treatment.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation involves taking a pill about an hour before your dental procedure to allow you to relax. This form of conscious sedation can range from minimal to moderate, depending on the dose of sedative we prescribe you. You'll feel drowsy and relaxed, but you'll be awake and responsive to directions throughout your treatment. The best part is that you won't remember much about the procedure. The effects of the sedative will linger until the next day, so make plans to have a trusted adult drive you home after treatment.
Intravenous (IV) sedation
This moderate form of sedation involves administering anti-anxiety medication directly into your bloodstream through an IV, so you'll feel its effects right away. It allows us to adjust the level of sedation throughout your procedure, depending on your needs. You'll stay awake during treatment but will feel comfortable and relaxed. Most patients have little to no recollection of receiving treatment. After your procedure, you'll feel drowsy and will require some recovery time. Make sure you have a trusted adult drive you home and stay with you until the effects of the medication wear off completely.
